The PC memorizes the images acquired by the sensor  on 16 bits.

This means that every pixel can assume a value included between 0 and 65535.

The visualization of the image on the display limits the potentialities of the CCD camera strongly, since it works with only 8 bit (which correspond to 256 values). For this reason, it is not possible to show all the shades and it is necessary to make a kind of compression : different values respect to the acquired ones will correspond to an only one on the display. The standard way of working is the following:

- To identify the present maximum and minimum values in the image (MAX/MIN)

- To establish the rounding off step, the number of acquired values which will correspond to one of the display only . The used formula is the following: STEP = (MAX-MIN)/256.

For example if an image presents values included between 0 and 12556, the step will be of 49: values which are different at least of 49 will be able to be only distinguished.

- The value which will be shown is established for every acquired value:

equation

where A is the amplification factor.

In the example the values included between 0 and 49 will be shown as 0, between 50 and 99 as 1, and so on ( with A = 1 and Voffset = 0 ).

How it is easy  to guess , minor it is the MAX-MIN difference, minor will be the rounding off and then greater the contrast of the image. For this reason, with the histogram function, it is possible to modify the MAX/MIN values and to fit the representation mode to your demands.  It is furthermore possible in the same window always knowing the real values of the pixels and their correspondence with the shown values. (see Analysis toolbar).
