Quantization noise

The digitalization of the signal coming from the CCD causes this kind of noise. The A/D converter carries out a rounding off, dividing the signal into levels: 256 for 8 bits, 4096 for 12 bits, 65536 for 16 bits. Minor it is the number of levels, major will be the introduced mistake.

With an 8 bit converter the approximation could be greater than the thermal and the reading noises and therefore limit the accuracy in the acquisition of the images.

Questo tipo di rumore e' dovuto alla digitalizzazione del segnale proveniente dal CCD. Il convertitore A/D attua un arrotondamento dividendo il segnale in livelli: 256 se e' a 8 bit, 4096 a 12 bit, 65536 a 16 bit. Minore e' il numero di livelli, maggiore sarà l’errore introdotto.

Con un convertitore a 8 bit l’approssimazione potrebbe essere maggiore del rumore termico e di lettura e quindi limitare la accuratezza nell’ acquisizione delle immagini.
